Hartson Photography - History / About Us / Owner Bio

History…. short and sweet.

2005... Hartson Photography celebrated 20 years in the biz !

20 years in any business is a big milestone indeed.
For 17 of those 20 years, owner Steve Hartson worked industrial / scientific photography by day with The Boeing Company... then offered personal / commercial photography by night. Seattle hardly knew of Hartson Photography since moving from Everett (in 1986) but the industrial and scientific photography experiences at Boeing was a kool thing.

All the while, Steve kept a private photo studio busy for 10 years- producing product shots, brochures, publicity headshots, classic portraits, and some fine art documentation. Steve also enjoyed 8x10 Polaroid transfers which hung in several local galleries in the late 90's. By the fall of 2003, when Boeing further reduced services, Steve 'went back to business' bringing his solid commercial, industrial, and construction photography experience full-time to regional clients.

Owner Biography... (The long version for all you inquiring types)
Steve Hartson became a professional photographer in the late 70's working small assignments with Pringle-Marchand Studios and various projects around Western Washington. Steve also worked 5 years with PPofA decorated Master of Photography and Fellow of Photography Robt (Bob) Benson in Everett WA.; Solidifying his own ‘classic look and style’ with portraiture, commercial, and industrial photography products.

Client list includes: Scott Paper Company, Fluke Electronics, Western Gear, The Port of Everett, Everett Steel Companies, Snohomish County Public Utility District, Everett School District, Lake Stevens School District, Olson's Foods, and many other regional businesses and industries.

Eight years later (in 1985) now a new graduate with honors from Bellevue Community College ( AA degree in Bio-Medical Photography and extended study in scientific imaging techniques), Steve soon began work as a commercial photographer with The Boeing Company. Hartson Photography also followed Steve into Seattle and operated from a shared studio space in Seattle's Capitol Hill district. For the next 10 years, Steve enjoyed both an active studio life and all the daytime Boeing duties... further honing his portrait and commercial photography skills. Steve also mastered 8x10 Polaroid Transfers and many prints were selected for shows in regional galleries. By 1997, the Polaroid Corporation organized a national travelling exibit (with Polaroid Transfers) and Steve's 8x10-inch 'Bucket of Fish' was selected from over 400 entries.. to represent Seattle's part with the program... nice. Between the day work at Boeing, galleries, and studio night work - Steve was busy!

By 1993 much had been accomplished. Thousands of photos... for hundreds of projects later. During that time, the Boeing photo staff began using Nikon / Kodak digital photo systems for primary image gathering. The new digital medium rapidly proliferated within engineering documentation offices, and Steve (now working full time with the scientific photography group) became highly practiced with digital still and video techniques within Boeing structural and materials test labs. The new digital media also spawned the advent of a digital archive / filing system -a group effort- for Boeing Structures Lab. Steve worked with the lab's computing and engineering staff in the development of a marvelous online recordkeeping system (compatable with both PC and MAC computer systems).

1994-5 -A Boeing special assignment.
A 9-month stint as the focal photographer for the huge 777 Full Scale Static Test- The largest airplane test ever done by Boeing engineering (to date). This multi-million dollar 'do only once' test successfully completed when the final test destroyed the 777 airframe (a planned event). Full of special efforts like building custom camera mounts , lighting fixtures, and routing over 30 miles of cable.. all photo documentation went very well and the test was a career highpoint for Steve. For the next 8 years, Steve returned to the Developmental Center Structural Test Labs (also in Seattle) where he co-managed a satellite photo office with veteran photographer Les Engle.

All seemed ok up to 2003: Then Boeing downsized... again. Today, Steve has collected many well-rounded and time-tested photography skills with 30 years of uninterrupted professional photo experience. Steve still holds his trademark easy-going 'can-do' style working 'the new' Hartson Photography business.. and it shines with new services. What could be better?

Let's work our success together!

A technical photographer with a creative eye... A great combination !
